Wentworth Miller had his first taste of stardom in a role as the sensitive and introverted David in ABC's mini-series "Dinotopia" (2002/I) (mini). The very successful longform from Robert Halmi Sr. was a combination of character-driven action and state-of-the-art special effects, and was a story about a world where humans and dinosaurs live together in a magical civilization. From this effects-driven adventure story, Miller moved to one of Hollywood's favorite new projects, The Human Stain (2003), for Miramax. Having recently finished on location in Montreal, Miller had the opportunity to observe and work with Anthony Hopkins. The two share the film's central character, Coleman Silk, Miller playing him as a young man before the story moves forward in the tempestuous life of this Ivy League professor.
Miller has at least one thing more in common with the great British Hopkins: though he was raised in Brooklyn, Miller was actually born in the UK - in Chipping Norton, England where his father, a Rhodes Scholar, was studying.
A graduate of Princeton, Miller's stage time during college was spent singing, and he traveled the world performing with the school's famed a capella group, The Princeton Tigertones. For reasons still a mystery to himself, his family and his friends, the young graduate headed to Los Angeles to pursue a behind-the-scenes career in the entertainment industry. And while he was able, with enviable ease, to turn an internship into a paying job and an actual burgeoning career, before long the drive to move in front of the camera became inescapable.
With the support of committed management, within a couple of years Miller landed guest spots, learned fast and earned attention on series including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997) and "Popular" (1999). Dinotopia was his first starring role, and The Human Stain will be his first feature.
Miller now stars in Fox’s new hit drama Prison Break, playing Michael Scofield, a man who robs a bank just so he could help his brother escape from prison who awaits the death penalty.
TALKING ABOUT HIMSELF
- "Mine grows pretty quickly, like a Chia Pet"
referring to his hair
“I’m just a dork”
Went trying to down play his sexiness.
"I was raised with a certain work ethic. If you're going to do a job, do it well and no half-(way) measures. I was the best temp I could be and the best book clerk I could be."
"I wish I had an answer for you," That's the fantasy, that anyone is going to leave Eric Roberts at the altar for me. But I'm willing to play along."
On being in Mariah Carey’s music videos.
“I should point out that “Stinky” has nothing to do with hygiene. I had kind of a sarcastic attitude and was quick with the snark . I have been “Stinky” for the last 10 years or so.”
On his nickname “Stinky”
"No, I'm still on the market. Sad to say, but I haven't had time to find anyone. I’ve been behind bars 24-7"
Went’s excuse for why he’s not romantically involved
“My last meaningful relationship was about a year ago [2004?] and lasted only a few months, but it was hot and heavy-those are the best kind.”
Went on whether if he’s seeing anyone special
“When I’m with a woman, my focus is on her, and I hope her focus is on me. If it’s winter, a little bit of ice-skating or something like that, if that doesn’t sound too cheesy, too Love Story. A fire place. A little food, a little wine, a little music. You Can have a sandwich on the beach and that can be just as powerful as a night out in Paris”
Went on when he’s in a relationship.
“This has been the biggest year [2005] of my professional life. It’s like winning the lottery. One in a million”
Went on his Golden Globe nomination
THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY
- "What I realized was that it's very easy in this business to be a young Tom Cruise or a young Tom Hanks. People know what to do with you because they look at you and say, 'Ahhhh, a young Tom Hanks. This has already worked so well it'll work even better this time ... It's another thing to be a little bit off the beaten path because what that means is you have to go out and create something that wasn't there before."
“I value the experience I did have behind that desk because to make it in this business, you need the soul of an artist but the pulse of a bureaucrat. If you're waiting tables, waiting for your break, and you're not willing to come home every night after a long shift at the restaurant and stuff your head-shots and resumes into envelopes to send out to agents and managers, you're not going to make it. It's not going to happen for you."
"This business is ruled by fear. The people in charge can smell desperation, and they're not going to sink millions of dollars into you if you're tentative. I had to get past that."
"I heard an awful lot of noes. It was a valuable education: I can take rejection. Once 'no' stopped meaning anything, I started to hear a few yeses."
Went on the difficulties he faced before getting to where he is now.
ON HIS ACTING ROLES/GIGS
- “I sank six months into a feature film, which came and went. It’s gratifying to be part of a project that people are investing in over the long haul.”
About working on Prison Break
"I was looking at my CD collection every month to see what I wouldn't mind hocking to pay the rent. And I realized I needed acting like I needed air and couldn't walk away from it”
"It's got a stark beauty to it: the yellow brick of the walls, the green of the prison yard, the blue sky overhead. It has its moments of haunting beauty, but then when I'm sitting in the prison yard hanging out with the cast and crew getting ready to shoot a scene and enjoying myself, suddenly I'll remember that if I were an inmate at that facility, I'd only be outside one hour a day. The main surprise is how sad the place still is. It's got 150 years of pain and fear and violence soaked into those walls."
Went on working at Joliet Prison
"I have to say, for my own part, that [the premiere] was a bittersweet experience because, of course, I was very excited to get this show on the air and see what the reaction would be, but at the same time I couldn't help but think about those poor folks down South and the terrible time they were going through,"
“It’s a conspiracy at the highest levels”
Prison Break: Behind The Walls Special
“If have grandma’s giving me extra room in elevators … teenagers you know… giving me questioning looks”
People’s reaction to Went’s faux tattoos
“I don’t think you are going to see a scene where we’re sweeping the cotton swabs off the table and getting down and dirty in the infirmary.”
Went on the sexual tension between Michael and the prison doctor, Sara (Sarah Wayne Callies)
ON THE SUBJECT OF RACE
-
THIS AND THAT
- "My rule is you want someone who's got both feet on the ground. An ideal girlfriend might be someone who works in the business and can understand what you're going through but is not an actor themselves - is willing to run lines with you but when you start acting crazy, they throw up their hands and take you for what you are and be accepting."
Went on about dating actresses.
“You know I heard that the LAPD has s reservist program, you know just a few hours every weekend, you can learn you know how to use a gun and drive a car.”
Went imitating his father on Leno
"Everyone's a winner when there's free booze involved."
Golden Globes After Parties
``I once gave someone who was going cross-country a clock. I set the time to where I was, so that when I called we would look at the clock and always be together at the exact same time.''
How celebrities celebrate Valentine's Day: Looing back
"I'm a sucker for old-school Lionel Richie. This is going make me sound like a sap, but in sixth grade our school chorus had to sing our rendition of "Hello," and I kind of dug it.
