Little article about when Sophia and Hilarie were at the Mall of America. Hilarie Burton and Sophia Bush have many claims to fame. They both star on "One Tree Hill" on the WB (7 p.m., Wednesday, Ch. 9), but Burton made her name as an MTV VJ and Bush for marrying (and now separating from) her co-star Chad Michael Murray. They are also fledgling fashionistas.
The actresses took a few minutes in the basement offices of the Mall of America before signing autographs for a crowd of 500 (primarily teenage girls) to show us what they were wearing. The two play teenagers on TV, but they are both 23 (born just a week apart).
The timing of the photo shoot on a recent Saturday was a little unfair: Bush and Burton flew in that morning and changed in the bathroom at the airport. "I mean, we only spent five minutes getting ready today. I think we picked the smallest, most overcrowded bathroom in the whole terminal and we were just in everybody's way," said Bush.
"We were those girls," said Burton.
The two don't usually spend a lot of time in malls together, or shopping in general. "We work 17-hour days. So when I shop it's on the weekends with my boyfriend. We like the Hot Topic scene. We're theater kids who were a little goth, a little indie rock. So we're definitely the oldest people shopping at that store. But we can't get enough," said Burton, who was upset that her four-hour trip didn't allow time for a stop at the Mall of America's Hot Topic. "I heard there's a huge one here -- it's killing me!"
Bush's style is on the other end of the spectrum. "You're high end!" said Burton, pointing to Bush's lime green Balenciaga handbag.
Bush can't disagree, but has a hard time finding her style at any old mall. "It just depends on the time, especially being in Wilmington [N.C., where the show is filmed], we don't have a whole lot to work with, so I do a lot online, I do a lot of shopping when I go to New York."
"We don't have a Mall of America!" added Burton.
After our five-minute photo shoot, Burton and Bush were ushered up to the rotunda where they graciously autographed everything placed before them -- promotional posters, "One Tree Hill" memorabilia, and the February issue of CosmoGirl!, with Bush on the cover. The nearby Barnes & Noble was sold out of anything remotely related to the show.
Jennifer Broders, 16, and Kendall Halvorson, 18, both from Eagan, were first in line after arriving at the mall at 6:30 a.m. and were happy to show off their signed images. Even though they couldn't recall exactly what the stars were wearing, they reported this: "They're both really, really small and sweet and pretty," said Broders. Halverson added: "Yeah, I wish I looked that good with my hair in a bun."
MAKEUP ESSENTIALS BUSH: Benefit's Bad Gal Lash (www.benefitcosmetics.com). Burton: Kanebo mascara. I never leave the house without ... Bush: "My cell phone." Burton: Wearing a skull. "How many do I have on today? One, two, three -- and a Medusa!"
